The Philippines’ Blue Swimming Crab Fishery Root Cause Analysis Report

Abstract:
This report presents the result of an in-depth sector analysis for the Blue Swimming Crab (BSC) commodity sector in the Philippines, as well as a review of the implementation of the earlier Blue Swimming Crab Management Plan (BSCMP), with intended activities up to 2015. It investigates and identifies the weaknesses, threats, and gaps, of the sector towards sustainable fisheries management for the BSC commodity, as well as the strengths of, and opportunities for, the industry. The different stakeholders and enablers of the BSC supply chain in the Philippines were engaged in participatory discussions. Results from previous research publications, government reports, technical and working papers, and records from private sector were also utilized in the analysis. This report is primarily purposed to support the development of the next-cycle Blue Swimming Crab National Management Plan for 2020 onwards. This report was developed by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). It was funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), through the Global Sustainable Supply Chains for Marine Commodities (GMC) project, implemented by the UNDP.
